Fact of the Day Image Nov. 13th

Space is vast and endless. It is full of planets, stars, moons, and asteroids. But, you can’t hear anything up there! Why? Because there is nothing to vibrate.

Sound is just a collection of vibrations, or something moving back and forth quickly. It happens when the air, water, or other material around a vibrating object shakes. That shaking travels through the material as a sound wave. That is what we hear as sound! Sound needs a medium, or something that is can pass through. On Earth, it is either air or water. In space, there is nothing that can vibrate around the object that is making sound. That is because there is no air, water, or any other material surrounding you. That is why you can’t hear things in space!
