Fact of the Day Image Nov. 18th

Atoms are the building blocks of everything in our universe! They make up things like helium, water, rocks, air, and even humans! Atoms are microscopic, which means that they can only be seen with a special microscope.

Atoms have specific parts. There is the nucleus, which is the center of the atom. Then, there are even smaller parts. They are protons, neutrons, and electrons! Protons and neutrons make up the nucleus. The electrons orbit or spin around the nucleus. This is the basic structure of an atom!

Atoms make up molecules which are atoms that are bonded together. Water is a molecule. The molecule’s name is H20! That means that water is made up of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.

In a teaspoon of water, there are over 400 quadrillion atoms!!!! That is way more than the teaspoons of water there are in the Atlantic ocean!! If you were to lay out each atom in the teaspoon of water, it would be 3 million miles long! That is the distance from Earth to the Asteroid Belt!
