Elephants are very special animals! They are the largest land animal, and they have giant tusks! Those tusks are used for a lot of things by elephants. Those tusks are actually teeth!!
As an elephant grows, some of it’s teeth start to bulge out of their mouths. Over time, those teeth come through special places near their mouth and start to grow bigger and sharper. These tusks never stop growing! If you see an elephant with long tusks, it is probably very old. Male and female African elephants have tusks, but only male Asian elephants have tusks. Tusks are used for a lot of things by elephants, like digging holes, fighting, and defending themselves. Tusks are a muli-use tool… that grows out of an elephant’s mouth!
