Fact of the Day Image Dec. 3rd

When you look at an ocean, it looks blue! That is the color that we see and associate with water and the ocean. But, the ocean only looks blue to us because of the Sun’s light!

It is all due to absorption and reflection of light. Sunlight is made up of the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. These colors combine to make white light! Certain colors get absorbed and reflected by certain objects or materials. Water usually reflects blue light and absorbs all of the other colors. That means that we can only see the blue light that the water is reflecting. That is why when we look at the ocean, it looks blue!! It is all because of the Sun’s light, which is actually all of the colors of the rainbow together!
