Plankton are tiny organisms that are in the ocean. They are coated with exoskeletons. When those plankton die, they settle on the ocean floor and fuse together to form rock. The fossils of plankton form a hard rock on the ocean floor. This builds up over millions of years. That rock is what we humans use to make chalk!
