Fact of the Day Image February 15th

Even though the water around a hydrothermal vent in the ocean is over 700°F, there is still life thriving near the vents! Down in those waters, there is no sunlight and all that is there is just hot water and nutrients coming out of hydrothermal vents. But, bacteria and exotic-looking animals thrive in that environment. The bacteria are able to do chemosynthesis, which is doing photosynthesis without sunlight. This fuels an entire ecosystem powered by this bacteria!
